I
grew up as a Pastor's Kid in a family of five boys. YEAH! It was tough
on Mom, but she learned to cope! I have a great deal of respect
for my mom, and any other wives of those in the ministry. While times
have changed somewhat, for the most part when you are in ministry you
are on-duty 24/7. Together, my parents instilled in us the love of
Jesus. While dad was often doing the work of ministry, mom had a
ministry of her own in the five boys she was blessed with. Most of the
churches my dad served were the stereotypical small country churches
where pot-lucks and picnics were the norm. Not many families invited us
to dinner since we tended to eat well, but on those rare occasions when
we were invited over, my mom's last words as we unloaded from the
station wagon were "Now boys, whatever you do, don't be yourselves!" I
think we adhered to that pretty well.
I grew up going to church whenever the doors were open, and sometimes
when they weren't. Sunday School, church, Sunday nights, Wednesday
nights and youth group, I was there. It wasn't until the Lassie TV
series was in re-runs that I ever found out if she made it home.
Half-way through the regular shows, we were half way out the door for
church!
My spiritual journey started at the age of four, when I kneeled
beside my bed and asked Jesus into my heart. I have no doubt that the
experience was real, but as I grew up I was constantly rededicating my
life to Jesus and making sure that he was 'really in my heart.'
I think my parents always hoped that they would get at least one
pastor out of the group, but we all found other avenues of ministry
besides the full-time ministry. Having said that, I'm proud to say that
all of us have followed Christ in whatever avenues of life we've chosen.
I'm not saying we've always done a good job of following, but we are
running the race.
My career option took me into teaching Special Education for 20
years. During that time I was father, coach, and youth leader. Most of
my time as youth leader I was involved in the Jr. High/Middle
School age-group. You have to love those kids! They are brutally honest
and have a passion for life. My hope was that I could to
steer that passion in the right direction.
The Bible says we grow through adversity, and I've had plenty of
opportunity to 'grow'. "Built with Grace" is my close to my heart
because through this ministry I hope to do just what I tried to do in
the lives of those Jr. High kids...instill a passion for Jesus Christ
and the love He has for us. |
